Beyond the Surface
In the bustling city of Denver, Colorado, among the towering skyscrapers and vibrant urban life, lies a stark reality that often gets overlooked and ignored – homelessness. To anyone living in, or visiting, any major city in the United States, it is clear that homelessness is an epidemic. In Denver, the homeless population grew by over 32% in 2023, making it the fifth-largest homeless population in the United States. In this photo story, I aim to shine a light on the lives and faces of some of the individuals grappling with homelessness in Denver, as well as showing the juxtaposition of the extreme wealth and poverty of the city. This story is more than a collection of photographs; it is a testament to the struggles, resilience, and humanity of those facing homelessness.
A local homeless advocacy group, Housekeys Action Network (HAND), staged a protest outside of the Capitol building in Denver, Colorado, on April 22, 2024. In light of the ongoing Supreme Court hearing in Gran's Pass, Oregon, HAND brought tents to protest camping restrictions and bans. A "sweep" refers to forced displacement of homeless tents and encampments by officials. Across from the protest is a demonstration of Tesla's new Cybertruck.
Terese Howard, founder and lead organizer for HAND, explaining the mission outside the Capitol building in Denver, Colorado, on April 22, 2023. Terese has been advocating and fighting for homeless rights for over a decade. She has founded multiple advocacy groups, and is the board president of the Western Regional Advocacy Project (WRAP), an organization founded in 2005 by local justice organizations across the West coast.
Jerry Burton, one of the lead organizers for HAND, cracking jokes during the camping restrictions protest in Denver, Colorado, on April 22, 2024. Burton has experienced homelessness off and on since the 90's. As a Marine veteran, he is now in housing provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs, but continues to advocate for all those experiencing homelessness.
Protestors from the local homeless advocacy group, HAND, march tents around City Hall to protest camping restrictions and bans in Denver, Colorado, on April 22, 2024. The protestors, who started their march at the Capitol building, chant "Housekeys not handcuffs," "We are not animals," and "Housing is a human right."
